While the necromancer character seemed better suited to hanging back and zapping the enemy with magic spells, both the barbarian and priest character leapt into battle, though the priest character did prepare for combat by casting protective "buff" spells, summoning ghostly serpents and female spirits to cast magical wards on the party first. |
As we soon learned from this conversation, another survivor from the slave galley has washed ashore--the head slaver, who has fled to the nearby town and must be slain before he can alert the authorities to your presence. |
We quickly created a new Cimmerian character (Cimmeria is the homeland of Conan and one of the nations of origin you can choose for your character, along with Aquilonia and Stygia) and jumped into action. |
This game from developer Funcom and publisher Eidos will draw upon the dark and violent world of Hyborea that Howard created, and will feature highly distinctive battles that more closely resemble an action game than that of the usual automatic combat you tend to see in games like this. |
Funcom estimates that about 90' of Age of Conan players will eventually join a guild, so the studio is not only building additional non-combat activities into the game, it's also creating challenging group encounters that may involve new enemies spawning from the remains of old ones, as well as relentless attacks of enemies that come in waves, similar to some of the higher-level encounters from Funcom's Anarchy Online. |
The dungeon itself seemed to be an elegant temple under construction, alternating between rooms floored with red marble and pillars adorned with golden serpents, on the more developed side, and stony caves being carved out by slave crews. |
While the corruption tree works to make the assassin a little more hardy, the lotus tree veers more into the realm of poison, concentrating on multiple DoTs and chances to do additional damage. Though it's a higher damage output in lotus, the assassin only gets one heal ability this way, so he'll be more fragile. Also in this branch, the lower a target's health, the more powerful the assassin becomes. |
The assassin is built to have the highest single-target DPS in the game. The assassin's feat trees, according to Funcom, change how they play more significantly than any other class, mostly because their functionality would otherwise be too limited. |
While many on various message boards made a big deal about the game's poor graphical performance issues during the beta testing phase, Funcom surprised just about everyone with some last-minute updates and enhancements. |
We should note that the volcano section is part of the single-player quest line at the game's beginning level 1 - 20 sections, so there aren't any others around. The Acheronian Ruins and White Sands clips are out in the multiplayer realm, however, and manage to hold up. |
